Haines Named to All-NEC Preseason Team; Pioneers Projected to Finish Fourth

SOMERSET, NJ - Katherine Haines was selected to the All-Northeast Conference Preseason Team and the Sacred Heart women's basketball team is projected to finished fourth as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

The redshirt-junior forward was a member of the All-NEC Second Team and dubbed the league's Most Improved Player just a season ago after leading the Pioneers to a 13-5 league clip.

Starting in all 31 games she appeared in, Haines poured in 12.9 points per game slotting her second on the squad while crashing the boards for a team-high 8.7 rebounds per contest, grabbing 269, total. Haines' defensive prowess also credited 46 blocks on the season, the most of any Pioneer and finished with 10 double-doubles. The Ridgefield Park, NJ native tabbed double-figure scoring in 22 performances.

Sacred Heart enters the year looking to improve upon where it finished a season ago. After clinching second seed honors at the 2017 NEC Championships, the Pioneers topped seventh seed, St. Francis Brooklyn, 90-69 before a fourth-seeded Bryant snapped the Pioneer's hope of snagging a consecutive league title early, in a 75-68 semifinal battle.

Women's basketball welcomes back 11 returners while introducing six neophytes to the lineup. Before proving itself in the league, SHU will commence its nonconference slate Friday, November 10 with a road trip to Monmouth in time for a 6:00 pm tipoff.
