Women's Basketball Unveils 2017-18 Non-Conference Slate

Sacred Heart released its 2017-18 women's basketball non-conference on Tuesday. The Pioneers, coming off of a second consecutive WNIT appearance, will host five home games during the non-conference portion of the schedule.

"The non-conference schedule we have compiled will provide great challenges and learning opportunities for our student-athletes," said fifth-year head coach Jessica Mannetti. "I am excited about the season that is ahead and the opportunity to play five games on our home court against some top-notch competition."

The Pioneers open the campaign at Monmouth on November 10. The home opener comes five days later when the SHU hosts Manhattan at the Pitt Center, before travelling to Ivy League member Harvard on November 18.

A road highlight of the non-conference slate is a Thanksgiving Week trip to the Sunshine State to take on Florida A&M and Florida State. The Seminoles advanced to the Elite 8 in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, before falling to eventual national champion, South Carolina. SHU ends the month of November on its home court, hosting Hofstra, on November 30.

SHU plays three of its five Decenmber non-conference games at home, beginning on the 3rd when Lehigh visits campus.  The lone road trip of the month is to Brown for a December 6 contest.  Three days later the Pioneers welcome Big East Conference member Providence, before an eight-day break for final exams.  SHU returns to action following finals on December 17, with a trip to Siena.

The non-conference finale is December 20, when fellow 2017 WNIT participant New Hampshire visits the Pitt Center.  UNH won a program-record 26 games last season and a first-ever America East Conference Championship.

SHU posted a 17-15 mark during the 2016-17 season, finishing as runners-up in the Northeast Conference with a 13-5 mark.  The Pioneers have posted 65 wins over the past four seasons, with two WNIT appearances and an NEC Regular Season Championship.

The Pioneers return their second leading player, and 2017 NEC Most Improved Player, Katherine Haines, who averaged 12.9 points and a team-best 8.7 rebounds a game. Also returning is Erin Storck, who started 16 of her 32 games a year ago, averaging 5.7 points per game and shooting 36 percent from behind the arc as a sophomore.
