BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Conan Schuster finished in sixth-place in the 174-pound class Saturday at the EIWA Championships, hosted by Lehigh.
Schuster opened the day with a pin of Richard McDonald of Brown, the number-eight seed in the 174-pound weight class. The sophomore earned the fall with 0:24 into the third period. It was Schuster's second win of the weekend over a seeded opponent. In his next match, Schuster lost 13-1 to Brian Harvey of Army in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place match, Schuster faced Columbia's Shane Hughes. The two grapples traded takedowns throughout the match, with Schuster accumulating over two minutes of riding time. However, Hughes pinned Schuster 52 seconds into the third period to win the match.
"Conan wrestled his heart out all tournament," said head coach Andy Lausier. "This is a huge step in his career and for our program as well."
Sacred Heart finished the team tournament in 15th place with 11.5 points. The Pioneers were awarded the EIWA Sportsmanship Award at the end of the tournament, as voted on by the officials at the tournament. The award is given to the team with the best sportsmanship on the mat.
