Schuster Reaches Final Eight; Wrestling In 15th Place After Day One at EIWA Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Conan Schuster won twice in the 174-pound bracket Friday at the EIWA Championships at Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh Friday, guaranteeing himself a top-eight finish in the tournament.  Three other Pioneers won matches Friday to put Sacred Heart in 15th place after the first day of competition.

Schuster opened the day with a 5-3 upset win over fifth-seeded Bradley Wukie of Penn. After a loss to Navy's Jadaen Bernstein in the quarterfinals, Schuster won 3-2 against Stephen Loiseau in the wrestlebacks. At 165 pounds, Matt Fischer bounced back from a loss to Princeton's Jonathan Schleifer to earn a 6-5 win over Richard Muniz of Brown in the wrestlebacks. Dan Hayden also earned a victory in the wrestlebacks at heavyweight, beating David Farr of Army 7-6 in overtime.

The Pioneers accumulated six team points on Friday, putting Sacred Heart in 15th place in the team race. Cornell leads the team competition with 93 points, eight ahead of Lehigh. Columbia is third with 55 points.

The EIWA Championships conclude on Saturday.
