Wrestling Drops Close Dual With Franklin & Marshall 21-13

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart wrestling team lost a hard-fought 21-13 dual match to the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats at the Pitt Center Sunday night for PioneerPalooza.

The night opened with Tim Johnson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) taking on Dan Martoccio at 125 pounds. Martoccio led 2-0 after the first period, then had a reversal in the third period to go up 4-0. Johnson battled back with an escape and a reversal but it wouldn't be enough as Martoccio won the match 4-3, earning three points for the Diplomats.  At 133, Patrick Quinlan earned a pin in the third period to put Franklin & Marshall ahead 9-0. Robert Ruiz earned three more points for the Diplomats in the 141-pound weight class with a 10-3 win.

Brendan Goldup (Schuylerville, N.Y.) earned the Pioneers' first team points with a 5-0 win at 149. Goldup had a takedown in the final minute of the opening period against Michael Marano and used an escape to make the team score 12-3. Casey Mitchell (South Windsor, Conn.) followed up Goldup's win with an 8-5 win over Rob King in the 157-pound bout. Mitchell used two takedowns in the third period to win the match.

Franklin & Marshall then won the next two bouts at 165 and 174. Johnny Vrasidas (Smithtown, N.Y.) held a 2-0 lead for much of his match against Jacob Conners, but Conners took down Vrasidas in the third to force overtime. The Diplomat then earned a takedown in overtime for the 4-2 win. At 174, Gordon Bolig defeated Sacred Heart's Domenico Celli (Katonah, N.Y.) 5-2, giving the Diplomats a 18-6 lead.

Elliott Antler (Hebron, Conn.) put the Pioneers back on the board with a dominant 12-4 major decision victory over Anthony Mancini at 184. Sasha Oliinyk (Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine) won the match at 197 pounds, defeating Charles Kerkesner 10-6 to get the Pioneers within five points, 18-13, with one match remaining. Daniel Hayden (East Islip, N.Y.) escaped to start the second period and take a 1-0 lead, but Alex Henry took down the Pioneer heavyweight twice on his way to a 6-2 win.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. with Buffalo, Hofstra, and Northern Illinois.
