EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Sophomores Johnny Vrasidas, Casey Mitchell, and Kyle Brady each advanced to at least the round of 16 in their weight classes Sunday for the Sacred Heart wrestling team at the East Stroudsburg Open, hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
Vrasidas reached the quarterfinals of the 165-pound bracket on the strength of two pins and a decision. Mitchell went 4-1 on the day at 157 with two pins as Brady had a record of 3-2 at 141. Both Brady and Mitchell made it to the round of 16 and advanced through the wrestlebacks.
The Pioneers had 10 pins as a team on Sunday. Freshmen Jay Oakes and Sasha Oliinyk also had two pins each at 141 and 184 respectively. Domenico Celli and Paul Curtin each recorded their first career wins.
"I'm really pleased with the progress shown by our wrestlers today," said head coach Andy Lausier. "They made some key adjustments from our training last week, and as a result our wrestling was more aggressive from the first whistle to the last."
Sacred Heart will host its first dual meet of the season on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m., as the Pioneers host Franklin & Marshall for Pioneerpalooza.
