Brady, Polidore, and Moran Place at Wilkes Open to Lead Pioneers

Wilkes Barre, Penn - Competing at the 81st annual Wilkes Open, SHU Wrestling was led by a trio of place winners in Kyle Brady (South Plainfield, NJ), Andrew Polidore (Wayne, NJ), and Zach Moran (Columbia, CT). Brady and Polidore both wrestled to 3rd place finishes, while Moran placed 4th

Kyle Brady compiled a 4-1 record on the day.  He won two matches by decision to reach the semi-finals, where he was defeated by Jason Estevez of UNA-Montgomery College. Brady answered back with a come-from-behind 12-8 win over Nick Haegele and a solid 6-1 decision against Myzar Mendoza for his 3rd place finish.

Andrew Polidore put together three consecutive victories to start the day, tallying a 13-0 major decision, an 18-0 technical fall, and a 6-0 decision.  Polidore dropped his semi-final bout 13-5 to eventual champion Daniel Sanchez, but bounced back with a fall in 3:04 and a 4-3 victory for 3rd place at 141 lbs.

Zach Moran dropped his opening match of the day 7-6 to Eric Fajaro of Columbia.  Moran marched through the consolation bracket, with two major decisions and two decisions to reach the consolation finals, where he fell to Anthony Pafumi of Rutgers, 10-3.

Tomasz Filipkowski (Cutchogue, NY) also had a strong day on the mat, reaching the semi-finals, but an injury in the first period of that match forced him to default from the tournament.

Other Pioneers putting together solid performance on the day included Matt Fisher (3-2), Nick Lupi (2-2), Dan Hayden (2-2), and Brendan Goldup (2-1).

Joe Harris (Massapequa Park, NY), Casey Mitchell (South Windsor, CT), Sam Morison (Conshohocken, PA), and Jon Scheidegger (Newton, NH) all picked up a victory in their respective weight classes.

The Pioneers return to action this weekend, traveling to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for the F&M Open on Saturday, January 4th.  The following day, SHU Wrestling will host its home opener against Virginia Military Institute at 5:00 PM at the William H. Pitt Center.
