Bertucci Picks Up First SHU Win, 3-0 Over Saint Joseph's

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team defeated visiting Saint Joseph's College Long Island 3-0 on Saturday to give Pioneers head coach Bob Bertucci his first win at SHU. The Pioneers improved to 1-2 with the victory, while the Golden Eagles fell to 1-1 on the year. 

The Pioneers hit .354 as a team, with 35 kills to only seven errors in the victory. SHU led in the entirety of the first and third set, and trailed just twice in a second set that saw three lead changes and four ties, before the Pioneers pulled away.

Lead the way for the Pioneers was Shawn Tischler, who recorded 10 kills, with no errors, as he hit .625. Rob Chatterton hit .545, with eight kills, while Tim McIntosh led the way with 11 digs. The Pioneers finished with 15.5 blocks, led by nine from Chatterton

The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, January 24, when they host Harvard in the EIVA opener at 6:00 pm

First Set: SHU 25, SJC 13

  • SHU out to 3-0 lead in the opening set, and after back-to-back Golden Flash points, rattled off five straight, to build an 8-2 advantage
  • Back-to-back SJC kills made it 8-4, before a service error pushed the lead back to five; a margin that would be the smallest the rest of the set
  • The Pioneers pushed their advantage to 12-5, capped by a Chatterton kill and forced a timeout from the visitor
  • SJC would creep back within five on a Paul Curaro ace, 13-8, before a Tischler kill started a 4-2 run
  • The Pioneers finished the game with a 9-4 run

Second Set: SHU 25 – SJC 15

  • SJC took a 1-0 lead on a Flohr kill and led 5-4 after back-to-back errors by the Pioneers
  • A Chatterton kill brought the Pioneers even, 5-5, and started a 5-0 run that pushed SHU to a 9-5 edge that it wouldn't relinquish
  • The Golden Eagles were able to close within three points, five times after that, the last time at 13-10 on a Pioneer service error
  • A SJC service error started a 12-5 run for SHU to end the set

Third Set: SHU 25 – SJC 16

  • Jacob Peterson opened the set with a kill as the Pioneers again jumped out to an early lead, 3-1
  • Six different Pioneers had a kill in the set, while SJC committed 12 attack errors 
  • After a David Slager kill for SJC closed the SHU lead to 3-2, the Pioneers rattled of eight of the next 11 points to open an 11-5 advantage
  • The SHU lead dipped to five on three occasions after that, at 11-6, 15-10 and 20-15
  • Blake Cox finished off the set with consecutive service aces

By The Numbers

  • SHU finished with three service aces
  • Noah Ricchetti had 20 assists, in the first two sets, and Jacob Peterson added five in the third
  • SJC had 95 attacks, compared to 79 for SHU, but hit -.105 on the day
  • Curaro led the Golden Eagles with seven kills
