Pioneers Earn Second Straight Sweep In Win At UC

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team swept EIVA host University of Charleston (WV) Friday night on the road.

Rob Chatterton hit .706 on the night, pacing the Pioneers with 14 kills on 21 swings. Jakob Karlsson also reached double-figures with 10 kills. Joshua Ayzenberg recorded 14 digs and Noah Ricchetti handed out 40 assists in the sweep.

SHU concludes the regular season with a Saturday afternoon match at Charleston.

First Set: SHU 25-22

  • UC built an early lead, scoring three straight out of a 2-2 tie to take a 5-2 advantage
  • A service error gave SHU its first of four straight points, two from Chatterton kills that gave the Pioneers a 6-5 edge
  • The Pioneers never trailed again in the set, leading by as many as six points, 20-14
  • UC pulled within two points, with five of the next six points, 21-19
  • Taylor Bloomquist ended the set with a kill

Second Set: SHU 25-21

  • The Pioneers trailed just once in the second set, 6-5
  • There were nine ties, the last at 17-17
  • Karlsson put SHU in front with a kill, that was followed by a Ricchetti service ace to make the score 19-17
  • UC pulled within a point twice following that pont, with the last at 20-19
  • A service error doubled that advantage, with a SHU block and a Bloomquist ace extending the lead to 23-19
  • Blake Cox gave SHU set point with a kill to make it 24-20, and following a service error, a Chatterton kill sealed the set

Third Set: SHU 25-18

  • The Pioneers never trailed in the third set, with the lone tie coming at 1-1
  • A UC service error put SHU in front for good as the Pioneers scored five of the next six points
  • A Chatterton ace gave SHU its largest lead of the match, 21-14
  • That was the margin at 23-17 when a Karlsson kill gave the Pioneers set point
  • Ryan Santos answered with a kill to stave off the Pioneer victory, but Adriel Roberts committed a service error to give SHU the win

  • The Pioneers have won back-to-back matches with sweeps
  • Bloomquist hit .444, not committing an error in his 18 swings
