Tischler Leads Way In Sweep Of Alderson Broaddus

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team defeated host Alderson Broaddus University, 3-0, in the first match of a season-ending three match road trip.

Shawn Tischler led the Pioneers on the night, finishing with seven kills and five digs. He also added two kills on the evening. Noah Ricchetti handed out a match-best 27 assists for the Pioneers.

SHU travels to Charleston (WV) University for matches Friday and Saturday to conclude the season.


SHU           6-14

ABU           3-19

First Set: SHU 25-18

  • After dropping the first point of the match Rob Chatteron put SHU on the board with a kill and started a 5-0 run
  • The Pioneers led for the entire set, allowing ABU to score consecutive points on just two occasions in the set
  • Blake Cox ended the set with a kill
  • The Pioneers hit .412 in the opening set, with 10 kills

Second Set: SHU 25-23

  • Noah Ricchetti served the Pioneers to three straight points to open the second set
  • ABU was able to rally back, scoring five of the next eight points to knot the score 5-5
  • Cox gave SHU the lead back with a kill, followed by a Robert Costigan service ace
  • The Pioneers would never trail in the set, which ABU was able to tie six times
  • The last tie came at 21-21 on a kill by Paul Kaske
  • SHU scored four of the final six points, two on kills by Cox
  • The set winning kill came from Taylor Bloomquist and the set winning kill

Third Set: SHU 25-19

  • Michael McLaughlin had a set opening kill and then shared a block with Tischler to put the Pioneers in front 2-0
  • The Pioneers stretched the lead to four points, 6-2 and 7-3, before four unanswered points from ABU tied the score 7-7
  • A Cox kill put the Pioneers back in front 8-7, and he then served four more points to push the advantage to the largest of the set, 12-7
  • After a Kaske kill ended the run and started a 7-0 ABU run thanks in large part to five Pioneer hitting errors, giving ABU a 14-12 lead
  • A Terrell Hightower service error put SHU back on track
  • Bloomquist served five straight points to put the Pioneers back in front
  • The Pioneers never let the margin slip below three points and scoring three of the final four points to earn the win

The Numbers

  • The Pioneers had five more kills than ABU, with two fewer swings
  • SHU hit .278 on the evening, with 32 assists
  • SHU was clean in the second set, with 14 kills and no hitting errors
  • The Pioneers recorded four of their five service aces in winning the closet set, the second
