Men's Volleyball Falls 3-1 at Harvard

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to EIVA host Harvard University Friday night in Cambridge, Mass.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with 14 kills and eight digs. Jakob Karlsson also reached double-digits, with 10 kills and recorded three service aces. Joshua Ayzenberg recorded a match-high 15 digs and Tyler Lee had 23 of the Pioneers 44 assists.

SHU returns to the Pitt Center on Monday to host Erskine College at 7:00 pm. 


SHU           3-11; 0-8 EIVA

Harvard      6-11; 6-2 EIVA

First Set: SHU, 26-24

  • The teams traded early leads and were tied 6-6 when Riley Moore committed a service error, the start of a 4-0 Pioneer run that was capped by back-to-back kills from Waumans and forced a Crimson timeout
  • The Crimson rallied back, knotting the score 16-16, the seventh tie of the set
  • Neither team opened more than a two-point lead, SHU 22-20 on a Harvard service error, through 24-24
  • Waumans fourth kill of the opening set put SHU in front 25-24 and on the next serve, he paired with Taylor Bloomquist on a block to give the Pioneers the set victory

Second Set: Harvard 25-22

  • Harvard never trailed, jumping out to a 4-1 lead
  • The Pioneers rallied back, knotting the score 5-5 and 6-6
  • Erik Johnsson recorded a kill on the next service to begin a 4-1 Harvard run to open an 11-7 edge
  • Back-to-back hitting errors by the Pioneers gave Harvard its largest lead of the set, 16-10
  • The Pioneers were able to close within a point, 23-22, capping a run of 12-7, and forcing a Harvard timeout
  • After the timeout Marko Kostich scored on a kill to bring set point and then won the set with a service ace

Third Set: Harvard 25-17

  • The Pioneers opened an early 5-3 lead, with a pair of kills from Blake Cox, in the early portion of the set
  • Consecutive kills by Brad Gretsch brought Harvard square, 5-5, and began a 7-1 Harvard run that put the Crimson in front for good
  • SHU was able to close within three points, 11-8, on a Noah Ricchetti kill, but the Pioneers go no closer
  • Harvard scored three straight after that kill and allowed SHU to score consecutive points only twice more in the set, pulling away by scoring five of the last six points of the set 

Fourth Set: Harvard 25-21

  • The Pioneers again led early, scoring first on a kill from Karlsson and opening a 4-2 advantage on a Waumans kill
  • SHU last led at 6-5 after a Harvard service error, before back-to-back points gave the Crimson their first lead, 7-6, of the set.
  • A Waumans kill on the next service tied the score 7-7, before Harvard scored three straight to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish
  • The Crimson pushed its advantage to as many as seven points, 22-15, on a Gretsch kill
  • A Harvard error on the next points jumped the Pioneers into a 5-0 run, with a pair of Karlsson ace, as the Pioneers closed within two points, 22-20
  • The teams traded the next two points before a Gretsch kill and a block by Gretsch and Trevor Dow sealed the win

The Numbers

  • The first set featured 13 ties and no lead of more than four points and 31 combined kills against only six combined hitting errors
  • SHU hit .364, with two just two errors, in the opening set
  • Harvard finished the match with a .331 hitting percentage, recording 59 kills
  • The Pioneers finished the match with 19 blocks, including a match-best five from Waumans
  • Harvard had eight kills on its first nine attacks of the fourth set and hit a match-best .406 (16 kills, 3 errors) in the set
