Sacred Heart University men's track and field student-athletes Christian Turner and Cameron Croce have been selected to compete at the 2019 NCAA East Regional Preliminary. The East Regional will be hosted at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville, Fla., May 23-25. Turner will compete in the shot put, while Croce will compete in the hammer throw.
"Congratulations to Christian and Camera on earning berths in the east regional," said Pioneers head coach Christian Morrison. "They join a proud tradition of Pioneers that have earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level of collegiate sport and I look forward to watching them throw this week."
Turner, a junior, is the 29thseed in the shot put, with a qualify throw of 17.88m. Turner is coming off a win at the 2019 NEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, where his fifth-round throw of 16.92m, bested the competition by a full meter. Turner also won the shot put at the 2019 NEC Indoor Championship.
Croce is the 48thseed in the hammer throw, with his season best of 57.79m, which earned him second place at the New England Outdoor Championships. He is one of only eight freshmen in the hammer competition. Croce was named the Men's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer at the NEC Outdoor Championship, winning the hammer throw with a throw of 57.50m.
The top-12 finishers at each of the two NCAA Regionals advance to the NCAA Championships, June 5-8, hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
