Hamden, CT - Sophomore Graciano Brito tallied the only goal of the game off a feed from Nicolae Popescu early in the second half to give the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats remain in the thick of the Northeast Conference playoff hunt with the win. They are now 1-8-4, 1-2-3 in NEC action. Sacred Heart is 6-6-1, 2-3 in league play.
After a scoreless first half, Quinnipiac converted for the only offense it would need 10:58 into the second stanza. Popescu tapped a pass to Brito at the top of the box. Brito quickly turned and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
Sacred Heart turned up the pressure down the stretch. The Pioneers outshot Quinnipiac by a 14-8 margin in the second half. Sophomore Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT) led the way with seven shots while Junior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) and freshman Nemanja Filimonovic (Belgrade, Serbia) each had four.
However, freshman goalkeeper Alexander Rousselle (Morrisville, Vt.) came into the game in relief of injured starter Paul Fleck (Enfield, Conn.) and made five saves in the final 45 minutes. Fleck stopped seven shots in the first half.
The Pioneers return home next weekend for two more big NEC games. SHU will host Saint Francis (PA) on Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm and then celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when they welcome Robert Morris to Campus Field at 12:00 pm.
