Pioneers Close Season Hosting Hartford ... The Sacred Heart Pioneers will close out the 2006 season Wednesday afternoon hosting the University of Hartford Hawks. The Pioneers finished up the Colonial Athletic Association portion of their schedule last time out falling to #12 Towson, 14-5. The Hawks have lost 10-straight after back-to-back wins over VMI and Holy Cross earlier in the year. The Hawks host Vermont in their regular season finale.

The Series... Sacred Heart leads the all-time series, 4-3. The Pioneers have won three-straight in the series including a 13-12 win in last season's finale. SHU posted a 13-11 win in 2003 and a 16-8 win in 2002.

Last Meeting with Hartford... The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team closed the 2005 season with a 13-12 win over the University of Hartford on April 30th, 2005. SHU led 3-1 after one and took a 6-3 lead into the halftime break. Hartford scored the first three goals of the second half to tie the game at 6-6, getting goals from Josh Wasson-McQuigge, Brian Tilley and Andrew Rohmer in the opening three minutes. The Pioneers then went back up after a pair of goals and then carried a 9-8 lead into the final quarter. The Pioneers scored twice to open the fourth quarter and take an 11-8 lead with 9:41 remaining but the Hawks answered with three straight goals to tie the game once again. SHU's Matthew Robideau snapped the tie with a goal with 2:13 to play, and Greco added an insurance score less than a minute later. The goal would be needed, as the Hawks scored with 22 seconds to play to make it 13-12. Hartford won the ensuing face-off but couldn't get a shot on goal. Sacred Heart out shot Hartford 46-31 with nine different Pioneers scoring in the win.

Scouting the Hawks... The Hartford Hawks own a 2-11 overall record and an 0-4 record in the America East Conference. The Hawks two wins have come over VMI (13-10) and Holy Cross (11-3). Hartford is led by Josh Wasson McGuigge who has 30 goals, five assists and 35 points on the year. Eight of his team-high 30 markers have come on the man-up offense. Matt Holman and Tom Harris are the Hawks other offensive threats with 16 and 15 goals respectively.

SHU Last Time Out... Towson got three goals apiece from seniors Kyle Fiat and Phil Grillo and sophomore Brian Vetter as the #11 Tigers posted a 14-5 win over Sacred Heart. The Pioneers finished the CAA schedule. The Tigers dominated offensively throughout, ringing up 61 shots to Sacred Heart's 26. Towson used 4-0 runs to start the first, second and third quarter on the way to victory. Towson's Grillo added an assist to his three goals for four points on the day. Goalkeeper Mark DeGroat made five saves in earning the win for the Tigers. Leading the way for SHU was Kiel Adams who scored twice and Bobby Karl who passed out two assists. SHU seniors Thomas Hind and Jim Millhausen split time in goal for Sacred Heart, recording 11 and 10 saves, respectively.

SHU in the CAA Rankings... The Pioneers are sixth in the league in scoring with 7.62 goals per game. SHU is fifth in the rankings in assists per game (4.31 apg) and sixth in points per game (11.92 ppg). As a team, Sacred Heart is third best in the league on the penalty kill, allowing just 15 goals in 59 attempts (.746). Senior Senior Kiel Adams is eighth in goals per game (1.62 gpg). Junior Pete Greco and freshman Bobby Karl are tied for 10th in assists per game (0.85 apg). Senior Matt Robideau and sophomore Billy Fuchs are co-leaders in the league lead in man-up goals with six each. Senior Jim Millhausen is third in the conference in save percentage at .572 and fourth in saves per game (9.00 spg).

2006 Schedule... The 2006 schedule featured six teams currently ranked in the USILA and Inside Lacrosse Top-20 polls. Hofstra, Maryland, UMass, Colgate, Towson and Denver are all in the top-20 while Delaware, Binghamton and Air Force have been ranked or received votes during the year. The Pioneers played Maryland and Binghamton for the first time in school history.

Pioneers in the All-Time Record Book... Senior Matt Robideau currently ranks 11th all-time in career points (100 pts), 10th in career goals (66 g), 10th in career assists (34 a) and 9th in career ground balls (81 gb). Senior Kiel Adams ranks 16th in career goals (43 g) and is 20th for goals in a season (20 g - 2005). Junior Peter Greco ranks 15th all-time in career points (69 pts) and 19th in career goals (40 g). Senior Chad Clark is 4th all-time in career grounders (156 gb). Senior Thomas Hind holds the school records for career saves (528 svs) and career goals against average (11.25 gaa). He ranks 3rd in career wins (15) and has the 4th and 5th highest single season save totals (163 -2004; 159 - 2003). Senior Jim Millhausen is currently posting the 4th best single season goals against average at 10.14 gaa (2006).

Pioneer History... This is the 16th season of men's lacrosse at Sacred Heart. The Pioneers post a mark of 102-115 (.470) in their 16 year history. Head Coach Tom Mariano is the program's longest tenured coach in his 10th season at the helm. SHU begins it's fifth season of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association, one of the premier lacrosse leagues in the NCAA. Prior to joining the league, the Pioneers spent two seasons competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
