AMHERST, MA (March 23, 2004) - The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team held Sacred Heart scoreless in three of the four quarters to come away with a 12-4 win on a windy afternoon Amherst, MA. The Minutemen snapped a three-game losing streak with the win while the Pioneers remain winless on the year at 0-6 overall.

The Minutemen got their offense started early, scoring three goals in the first 7:28 of the first period. Chris Doyle, Matt Tundo and Ryan Connolly all tallied goals to give UMass an early 3-0 lead. Tundo notched his second goal of the period with 1:39 to play as UMass closed the quarter with a 4-0 advantage.

Massachusetts lead grew to 6-0 before Sacred Heart's offensive would tickle the twine for the first time on the day. Senior Ben Giamichael (Cortlandt, NY) scored unassisted at the 8:49 mark to ignite a Pioneer run. Sophomore Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY) followed with an unassisted goal just over a minute later. Freshman Rob Hommel (Valley Cottage, NY) picked-up his first goal of the year off a feed from Giamichael on the man-up advantage.

Giamichael pulled the Pioneers to within 6-4 on his second of the day off a feed from junior Dana White (Gorham, ME). UMass' Brett Garber stopped the Sacred Heart rally with his second goal of the season with just 30 seconds to play before halftime to give the Minutemen a 7-4 cushion into the break.

SHU went stone cold in the second half, getting outscored 5-0 with UMass outshooting the Pioneers, 22-7. Connolly got UMass rolling with his second goal of the game four minutes after halftime and Tundo completed his first career hat trick with five minutes to play in the third period for a 9-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Three Minutemen goals in the fourth quarter and UMass was well on its way to its third win of the year. Pioneers goalkeeper, Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 12 saves in goal in taking the loss.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Saturday afternoon, March 27th, hosting Colgate at 1 pm.
