Men's Ice Hockey Announces 2009 Schedule

Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2009-10 schedule. Head coach Shaun Hannah will lead his team against some of the top teams on the East Coast as well as its traditional Atlantic Hockey rivals.

The Pioneers open the 2009-10 season with an exhibition game against St. Thomas University on October 4 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Three weeks later the Pioneers will head to New York's Capitol District to start the regular season with a pair of games against ECAC foes. SHU visits RPI on October 23 and Union on October 24 in the season's first weekend. After hosting American International in their home opener, the Pioneers will head back up the New York State Thruway for a pair of games at St. Lawrence over Halloween weekend.

The Atlantic Hockey schedule gets rolling in November as the Pioneers will have a home-and-home series with Holy Cross November 6-7 followed by weekend sets at Bentley and RIT. The highlight of the Pioneers non-conference schedule comes on November 24 as Sacred Heart travels up I-95 to take on defending ECAC Hockey Champion Yale in the first ever meeting between the two Connecticut schools. SHU will close out the first half the season with a series at Army December 4-5 and a visit to Dartmouth on December 13.

After 11 of their first 13 games on the road, Sacred Heart will kick-off 2010 and the second half of the schedule with eight straight home games in January. On New Year's Weekend, January 2-3, Air Force will be at the Milford Ice Pavilion, followed by the other AHA service academy, Army the following weekend. In the second half of the month, Mercyhurst and Canisius will each come to Milford for two game sets.

Visits to AIC and UConn comprise the final week of January before RIT comes to Milford for a series in the first weekend of February. The stretch run of the regular season has home-and-home series with AIC and Holy Cross and a trip to Air Force in the final weekend.

The 2010 Atlantic Hockey Tournament will have the same format as last year. The bottom four teams will have one game play-ins on March 6th with the winners advancing to the best-of-three quarterfinals March 12-14. The championship round is set for the following weekend with the semifinals March 19 and the Championship game on March 20.
