HAMILTON, NY (October 29) - The Sacred Heart Pioneer men's ice hockey team fell to ECACHL opponent Colgate University in non-conference action on Friday night.
Colgate opened up the scoring 9:50 into the contest on the power play. Mike Campaner used a screen in front of sophomore goalkeeper Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) and sent a low slap shot to Smith's glove side for a 1-0 Raider lead. Kyle Wilson and Darryl McKinnon picked up assists on the play. The Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 when they would convert another power play opportunity, this time by Darryl McKinnon. The Pioneers would continue to struggle killing penalties, as just 3:50 into the second frame, Colgate converted a third power play situation into a goal, coming off the stick of Marc Fulton.
The Pioneers would climb back into the contest, scoring what looked like to be their first goal at the 7:06 mark when Rocco Molinaro's (Deerborn, MI) slap shot went past Colgate goalie Steve Silverthorn, hit the back of the net and immediately ricocheted back into play. After the next whistle, the referee awarded the goal to the Pioneers to cut the lead to 3-1. Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) and Noel Henck (Long Beach, NY) picked up helpers on the goal.
Any momentum Sacred Heart gained from the goal, was quickly vanquished 1:55 later, when the Raiders caught SHU in a line change, and defenseman Joey Mormina skated in alone and was able to beat Smith for a short handed goal.
The Raiders would close out the scoring midway through the third period when Zac Tataryn intercepted a clearing pass from deep within Sacred Heart's zone and put it past Smith for the fifth Raider goal.
Smith ended the night with 28 saves while Silverthorn finished with 23 saves. SHU returns to action on Saturday night when they travel to Ithaca, NY to take on Cornell University. Face off is at 7:00 PM.
