Schnectady, NY - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team played their second overtime game in as many days upending Union 6-5 Saturday night in Schnectady, NY. Union erased a four goal deficit in the third period but the Pioneers scored with 1:29 remaining in overtime to capture the win. Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) lit the lamp with the game winner for Sacred Heart. The victory is the first for SHU this season and the first career win for new head coach CJ Marottolo.

Sacred Heart (1-1-0) owned the first period, jumping out to a 4-1 lead.  Senior Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) started off the scoring notching an unassisted marker 8:36 into the opening frame.  The Pioneers then capitalized on two powerplay opportunities in a two minute span to increase the margin to 3-0.  Johnson put in the first of the two goals with assists from Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) and Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON).  Just 1:44 later David Berube (Quebec, QC) notched his first goal of the game with the assist credited to captain Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON).

Union (3-2-1) cut into the SHU advantage with 1:44 remaining in the period on a Jason Walters goal.  The Pioneers would answer quickly as Berube found the twine again for his second goal of the night to give Sacred Heart a 4-1 advantage at the first intermission.  Laurysen scored the only goal of the second period just 36 seconds into the frame as the Pioneers went into the final stanza with a 5-1 lead.

The Dutchmen outshot Sacred Heart 20-9 in the third period but did not score until there was just 7:06 on the clock.  But Union exploded before the end of regulation as Kelly Zajac, Wayne Simpson, Adam Presizniuk, and Jason Walters all chipped in with markers to send the game into overtime.

The Pioneers fell to RPI last night in overtime but would not be denied a win for the second straight day.  Johnson scored the game winner on the power play with 1:29 remaining in the extra frame, Boisvert and Jarman both earned an assist on the goal.

Sacred Heart opens Atlantic Hockey play Tuesday in their home opener as they host AIC at the Milford Ice Pavilion.  Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
