Pioneers fall to Lakers in Season Finale

ERIE, PA (March 5) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers (13-20-1, 13-10-1 AHA) fell to a late charging Mercyhurst (15-15-4, 12-7-5) club in the regular season finale by the score of 4-2 at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena on Saturday night. The loss drops SHU into the fifth place heading into tournament action, which means a road trip to Worcester, MA to face off with Holy Cross.

The Lakers would jump on top for the second night in a row, scoring the first goal of the game late in the first period off the stick of Ben Cottreau at 17:25 on the power play. It would be the first of three goals with the man advantage that Mercyhurst would score.

The Pioneers rallied in the middle frame, taking the lead with a pair of goals. Andrew Billinghurst (Ft. Collins, CO) leveled the game at 1-1 mid way through the stanza on the power play. Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburg, PA) and Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) assisted on the goal. Sacred Heart would then take their first lead of the weekend at the 18:15 mark when Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC) converted a Frederic Harland (Rosemere, QC) pass into a 2-1 lead. Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) also picked up a helper on the goal.

Sacred Heart would hold the 2-1 lead until the 11:41 mark of the third, when Cottreau netted his second power play goal of the game. The Lakers would take advantage of their next power play chacne at the 13:34 mark to re-take the one-goal lead. The Pioneers pulled netminder Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC) for the extra skater, but the Lakers ended the game at teh 19:18 mark firing in an empty net goal.

LaPointe finished the night making 31 saves in taking the loss, while Mike Ella stopped 35 shots to pick up the victory.
