MILFORD, CT (February 4) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers (9-14-1, 9-4-1 AHA) took down the Connecticut Huskies (7-19-2, 6-9-1) in a dramatic 4-3 over time thriller at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday night.
The Pioneers would open the scoring on their second power play opportunity of the game at the 5:20 mark. It would be Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) who would re-direct a Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) slap shot up and over the glove of UConn net minder Brad Smith (Detroit, MI) for the 1-0 lead. Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) also picked up an assist on the goal.
The Huskies would fire back on a power play of their own, with Chris Uber (Ithaca, NY) netting the power play tally with helpers from Mike Neilon (St. Paul, MN) and Tim Olsen (Vandais Heights, MN). The Huskies would go on top mid-way through the second on the first of two Charles Solberg tallies (Barrington, IL).
Sacred Heart would rally back on O'Brien's second power play goal of the night scored at 12:30. Wright, who had sent a shot wide that O'Brien knocked in, picked up an assist on the goal along with Larson.
Connecticut would fire back re-taking a one goal lead on Solberg's second of the night. After taking a pass from Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, ON) he streaked in and sent a shot top shelf past SHU goaltender Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC) to re-establish the Husky lead.
The Pioneers would equalize early in the third on a goal credited to Larson. With a pile up in front of the UConn net, Larson sent a shot that looked as if it would float harmlessly wide, but it deflected off an UConn defenseman and slid into the empty net to knot the game a 3-3.
The Pioneers looked like they had gone up 4-3 with 4:04 remaining in the third, but referee Jack Dunn waved off a Barclay Folk (Westbank, BC) goal alleging that the puck was kicked into the net. Neither team would break the deadlock and the contest headed into overtime.
The overtime period didn't last long as freshman Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC) fired a shot from the high slot past Smith to send the crowd home happy. O'Brien started the play dancing across the blue line where he found Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) with a pass. Billinghurst then fed Parent for the slap shot to win the game.
Kevin LaPointe finished the night making 26 saves in picking up the victory, while Smith stopped 30 in taking the loss.
The two teams will hook up again tomorrow night for the back end of a home and home set at the Freitas Ice Arena in Storrs, CT. Face off is at 7:00 PM.
