Milfod, CT - Senior Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) netted Sacred Heart's first two goals and later added an assist as the Pioneers finished a series sweep of first-place Air Force Sunday night. Goaltender Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 36 saves on the night and allowed just one goal for the third consecutive game. The win is the Pioneers third straight and marks the first ever SHU sweep of Air Force.
Sacred Heart (6-9-2, 4-6-1 AHA) struck first as Jarman tallied his fifth goal of the season with 9:34 to play in the period. Jarman threw a one handed slap at a loose puck in front of the net that float the puck over the entire Falcon defense and into the net for the game's opening goal. Patrick Knowlton (Colorado, CO), who finished the game with a goal and two assists, set up the opening goal forcing a turnover in the offensive end after the Falcons controlled a face-off.
Air Force (8-8-4, 8-4-4 AHA) tied the game just 19 seconds later as Brett Nylander scored with a one timer from a Matt Fairchild pass. The Falcons dominated the rest of the period outshooting Sacred Heart 16-4 on goall and attempting 42 total shots. Legatto kept his team in the game earlier coming up with 15 of his 36 saves in the opening twenty minutes.
The Pioneers pulled ahead 12:51 into the second stanza on Jarman's second goal of the game, which would prove to be the game winner. Jarman got a centering pass from Knowlton and beat Air Force goaltender Andrew Volkening with a spectacular deke to give SHU a 2-1 advantage. Knowlton and Jarman would connect again with 4:15 to play in the second period as Jarman through a back handed pass through the crease that Knowlton banged home for his fifth goal of the year. The Pioneers outshot the Falcons 16-9 in the second period and carried a 3-1 edge into the second intermission.
The Falcons would have a golden opportunity to get back into the game as they were awarded a five-on-three powerplay for 1:06 midway through the final period. The Pioneer defense would stand tall and kill the entire power play, holding Air Force to 0-4 with the man advantage on the night. Sacred Heart added two empty net goals at the end of regulation to bring the game to its 5-1 final, freshmen Reid MacLeod (Teulon, MB) and Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) posted the goals. David Berube (Quebec, QC) got an assist on both of the empty netters to give him a four-point weekend against the Falcons.
Sacred Heart will bring its three game winning streak back to the Milford Ice Pavilion next weekend as they take the ice against the Army Black Knights. The first game of the weekend series will be Friday night, puck drops at 7:05 pm.
