Magera Nets Game Winner as Pioneers Defeat Robert Morris for First Time in Program History

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team defeated Robert Morris on a game winning goal by Austin Magera to give the Pioneers a 2-1 victory. The team looks for the sweep of the Colonials tomorrow afternoon. Puck-drop is set for 2:05 p.m.

The Pioneers would be the first team to jump out to a lead after the first period went scoreless, sophomore Matt Tugnutt would score at 16:40 in the second off assists by Austin Mcllmurray and Ruslan Rahkmatov to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. In the first two periods combined SHU would outshoot Robert Morris by a total of 18-15. Tugnutt's goal would be his third of the season.

But the game still had a whole period to go and that would be when Robert Morris wanted to strike. Just fifty seconds into the third and final period, Luke Lynch would score a shorthanded goal at :48 to tie the game up at 1-1. The game would back and forth as both sides would attempt to net the game winner but neither goal Josh Benson or Francis Marotte as the two combined for a total of 48 saves in the game. The Pioneers would find a glimmer of hope as at 15:46 off a wise penalty that was drawn by Matt Tugnutt to send the Pioneers on the powerplay, freshman Austin Magera would nail in the game winner to give the Pioneers the first win over Robert Morris in program history.
