FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team faces off against Canisius for a two game road series beginning on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. Game times for both games are set for 1:05 p.m.  

Last Time Out... The Pioneers were swept at home against Mercyhurst this past weekend. SHU fell in first game by a final score of 4-3 in overtime while the Pioneers were edged in the second by a score of 3-0.

In the first game, junior Vito Bavaro tallied two goals in the game in contribution to sending the game into overtime. Meanwhile six different Pioneers notched assists in the game.

Last Meeting...SHU's late comeback attempt in the third period fell short, dropping its series finale to Canisius 3-2 on Nov. 7, 2017. The Pioneers put up two goals in the third period and drew a big power play with 2:13 to go but were unable to tie the Golden Griffins in the final meeting of the season for both teams Ruslan Rakhmatov and Jason Cotton registered the SHU third period scores. 

Marc Johnstone picked up an assist in the fourth straight game. Matt Tugnutt registered an assist and Austin McIlmurray led SHU with a multi-assist showing. Brett Magnus registered 26 saves in goal for the Pioneers.

Scouting The Griffs...Canisius welcomes back 20 letterwinners from its 2017-18 squad that finished second in the Atlantic Hockey regular-season standings with a 17-11-0 record and advanced to the semifinals of the postseason tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The Griffs return eight of their top nine scorers from a season ago, led by Hobey Baker Top Ten Finalist and 2017-18 Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year Dylan McLaughlin, who ranked among the top-10 players nationally in points (1.30/7th) and assists (0.84/8th) per game. Fellow All-Atlantic Hockey First Team selection Cameron Heath also returns after leading the defense in goals (7), assists (14) and points (21). The Griff were picked to finish seventh in the 2018 Atlantic Hockey Preseason Poll.

Bavaro Breaks Into the Season On High Note...Junior forward Vito Bavaro scored his first goals of the season last Friday Night against Mercyhurst has he tallied two goals for the Pioneers in the tight 4-3 overtime loss. Bavaro's second goal helped send the game into overtime as a fired a shot passed the goalie at 19:00 in third period off a pair of assists by redshirt junior Jason Cotton and sophomore Matt Tug
