BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team (2-6-1, 2-4-0 AHA) fell to Mercyhurst by a final score 3-0 tonight. The team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 23 when the team travels to face Canisius. Puck-drop is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
The game would be a heavily defensive one as neither team would be able to pull of a first period goal to keep the game scoreless heading into the second period. The Pioneers would be able to fire off 12 shots while Mercyhurst attempted just eight. Freshman goalie Josh Benson had an impressive defensive showing in the first as he tallied all eight saves in the first.
In the second the Lakers would be able to score the opening goal of the game at 12:41 as James Anderson would slip a shot passed the netminder Benson while the Lakers were on the powerplay to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would strengthen their attempts on shots but impressive goaltending by Mercyhurst's goalie and Anaheim Ducks draftee Garrett Metcalf would hold the Pioneers to no goals in the second while faced with 12 shots by the SHU offense.
The Lakers would tally two more goals in the third period to eventually give the Lakers the 3-0 victory to still leave the Pioneers winless at the home barn in Bridgeport. The team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 23 when the team travels to face Canisius. Puck-drop is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
