Setting the Scene...The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team welcomes Robert Morris for a pair of weekend matinees at Webster Bank Arena to open the final month of the regular season.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers earned a 2-1 win over Air Force on Friday , January 19. Jackson Barliant opened the scoring at 3:04 in the first period. The Falcons tied things up at 12:35 in the first on the goal by Marshall Bowery. SHU struck early off an Air Force turnover in the second as Mel Melconian chipped in the eventual game winner at 3:22. Junior Brett Magnus recorded 17 of his 35 saves in the final period to secure the win for the Pioneers.
Last Meeting... SHU was edged out by Robert Morris, 2-1 in the final meeting of the 2016-17 season on December 3, 2016. The Pioneers got on the board at 14:07 in the second on the power play goal by Mitch Nylen. The Colonials answered shortly after with Spencer Dorowicz lighting the the lamp at 16:32 in the second. RMU then capitalized just 13 seconds into the power play with Brady Ferguson's goal at 1:22 in the third period. Brett Magnus recorded 26 saves in goal for SHU.
All-Time Series... The Colonials hold the 20-0-1 advantage over the Pioneers in the all-time series. Four out of the last seven meetings between both teams has been decided by one goal. SHU looks to pick up its first win against RMU in the race for Atlantic Hockey points up the standings.
Scouting The Colonials... Robert Morris enters the weekend fresh off a series split at AIC, earning the 5-3 win this past Saturday. The Colonials sit fourth in Atlantic Hockey at 11-13-2, 10-8-2 in conference play. Brady Ferguson continues to push the Colonials attack in his final season with 36 points on 12 goals and 24 assists. RMU also boasts three double-digit goal scorers in its lineup. Francis Marotte boasts a .914 save percentage and a 2.61 goals against average in 24 games for the Colonials.
Magnus Stellar In January... Junior goaltender Brett Magnus recorded a sensational month of January with a 3-1-1 record along with a .940 save percentage along with a 1.98 goals against average. He earned his second Atlantic Hockey Goalie of The Week honors on Jan. 23 afer posting back-to-back Atlantic Hockey wins . He recorded 75 saves on the week with 40 in the 4-2 season series sweep over Bentley and 35 in the 2-1 win over Air Force.
Pioneers Killing Penalties... The SHU penalty kill unit is has gone 12-for-12 in the last three games. On the season, the Pioneers are 92-111 (82.9%) which ranks fifth in Atlantic Hockey and 20th in the nation.
Pioneers in the Pros Update... Five SHU hockey alumni have represented the Pioneers well in the 2017-18 season. The group of five has spent the season in the ECHL with Justin Danforth leading the way. The junior earned an ECHL All-Star nod for the Cincinnati Cyclones back on Jan. 15, recording one goal and one assist for the Central Division. Danforth also won the ECHL's fastest skater contest with a record lap of 12.75; he leads all ECHL rookies in scoring with 44 points.
