Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team wraps up its season series against Holy Cross with the last home-&-home series this weekend. Friday night will take place at Webster Bank Arena and then the Hart Center on Saturday.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers picked up the 4-1 victory over Bentley on Tuesday night. After a scoreless first period, SHU picked up three goals in the second courtesy of Jordan Kaplan, Austin McIlmurray and Matt Tugnutt. Bentley got on the board early in the third but McIlmurray tacked on his second goal of the game to secure the win for SHU. Brett Magnus registered 26 saves in the win for the Pioneers.
Last Meeting... SHU & Holy Cross skated to a 5-5 overtime tie in the last meeting of the 2017 calendar year on December 30. The Crusaders took the lead late in the first period. The Pioneers earned the man advantage for nearly nine minutes in the second, tacking on goals three power play goals. After a quick Holy Cross goal the Pioneers buried two more to take a 5-2 lead into the intermission. The Crusaders didn't falter scoring three unanswered goals in the third to tie the game at 5-5. Liam Clare registered three assists & Vito Bavaro netted a goal and two helpers for SHU.
All-Time Series... Holy Cross leads the all-time series between both teams at 34-30-4. The Crusaders still command a 5-3-2 edge in the last 10 meetings. SHU looks for its first win against the Crusaders in the New Year.
Scouting The Crusaders… Holy Cross enters the weekend in third place in the Atlantic Hockey leaderboard with 18 points. The Crusaders fell victim to a weekend sweep by AIC last weekend. Scott Pooley leads the offense with a league and the nation with 18 goals scored. TJ Moore is the Crusaders main distributor with 12 assists. Goaltender Paul Berrafato is among the league leaders in save percentage and goals against average, starting all 22 games.
SHU Hosts Fourth Annual Jason Pagni Memorial Game… Friday's contest will be the fourth annual Jason Pagni Memorial Game held at Webster Bank Arena. SHU has a 3-0 record in the game played in honor of CT Hockey advocate, beating UConn 2-0 at the Taft School in 2014, Arizona State 3-0 in Danbury in 2015. The Pioneers downed Mercyhurst 3-2 at Pagni's alma mater, Avon Old Farms a season ago.
Johnstone Leads Atlantic Hockey Rookies… Freshman Marc Johnstone picked up his fifth multi-point game of the season in the Pioneers 3-3 overtime tie this past Saturday, he earned his third AHA Rookie of The Week honors on Tuesday. He reached the 20 point mark with his assist on the Pioneers third period goal on Tuesday night. Johnstone is tied for fourth nationally among freshmen with a .95 points per game average and leads AHA rookies in points (20), goals (7) and assists (13).
