Pioneers Travel to AIC For An Atlantic Hockey Showdown

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team heads to AIC for a weekend Atlantic Hockey showdown beginning Friday, November 10 at 7:05 p.m.

Last Time Out... The Pioneers late rally in the series finale to Canisius fell short as SHU was unable to tie the game on the man advantage, fall- ing 3-2. Canisius jumped to a 2-0 lead through the first two periods. Rus- lan Rakhmatov got the Pioneers on the board at 10:52 in the third with his power play goal. The Golden Griffs added the game winner at 15:48. Jason Cotton buried the extra attacker goal at 16:54 to bring the score to 3-2. SHU went on the power play over the final 2:13 but were held out of the net by Simon Hofley.

Last Meeting... SHU downed the Yellow Jackets 7-3 on November 22, 2016. AIC held a 3-2 lead at 12:09 in the second before the Pioneers put up five unanswered goals (1 in the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd). Jordan Minello & Evan Jasper recorded two goals each. Justin Danforth tallied a playmaker with his three assists. Nathan Perry made 12 saves in his first collegiate victory.

All-Time Series... The Pioneers own a favorable 30-18-8 record over AIC. In the last 10 meetings, SHU holds a 5-3-2 advantage, with current win streak of four straight games. The last six meetings between both teams has been hosted by the Yellow Jackets.

Scouting The Yellow Jackets... AIC enters the weekend with four points in Atlantic Hockey play, coming off a 3-2 OT win over RIT. Like the Pioneers, AIC earned a signature upset victory over #11 Penn State, 3-2 in overtime on October 20th. The Yellow Jackets are led by Shawn McBride who has four goals on the season. Brennan Kapcheck is the leading points scorer with eight as a rookie. Zackarias Skog is the top returning net-minder for AIC, entering the weekend with a 3.24 goals against average.

Underclassmen Pacing the Offense... The Sacred Heart offense has had contributions from 15 underclassmen so far this season. Nine of the Pioneers top-10 scorers are either freshmen or sophomores. The sophomore class leads the team with 34 points on 16 goals & 18 assists. SHU's rookie class has 27 points on seven goals & 20 assists.

Third Period Scoring Leads The Way... SHU has put up 11 goals in the third period through nine games. The team has a +2 differential in the final period and has put up 78 shots on goal, the most of the three periods of play
