FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Sacred Heart men's ice hockey duo of sophomore Vito Bavaro & freshman Marc Johnstone earned Travel Team USA Atlantic Hockey Player & Rookie of the week respectively after a series split against fifth ranked Notre Dame. Both players played pivotal roles in the team's highest win against a ranked opponent since defeating number one UMass- Lowell on October 13, 2013.
Bavaro was stellar leading the Pioneers to the 6-4 upset win over the Fighting Irish on Thursday night. The forward recorded his first career hat trick, two of his tallies came in the final period as the Pioneers erased a one goal deficit to beat Notre Dame. Bavaro was the first Pioneer since Justin Danforth to score three goals back on January 26, 2016. His final tally at the 13:24 mark in the third period was the game winner for SHU. Bavaro now leads Atlantic Hockey with four goals on the season.
Johnstone picked up his first career playmaker in the Pioneers win on Thursday night. The rookie recorded one on the Pioneers first goal in the second period. He added two more in the third including forcing a turnover in the Notre Dame to find linemate Zach Tsekos open for the score. He capped the night by finding classmate Jordan Kaplan wide open off the Irish extra attacker chance to seal the victory. Johnstone is tied for the team lead with four assist on the season and is second in Atlantic Hockey freshman scoring with four points.
The Pioneers begin a four-game homestand to start Atlantic Hockey play starting with a two-game set against Niagara beginning Friday, October 27 at 7:05 p.m.
