Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team hits the road for a two-game set against No. 5/6 Notre Dame beginning Thursday, October 19.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers skated to a 3-1 victory over UConn in the home opener at Webster Bank Arena this past Saturday. SHU took an early 2-0 lead after first period goals by sophomore Austin McIlmurray & freshman Matt Tugnutt. Freshman Alex Bates added a goal in the second period to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead. The Huskies added a goal in the second from Adam Karashik. Junior Brett Magnus registered a spectacular 44 saves for SHU holding the UConn offense. SHU went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill including a 6-on-3 chance for the Huskies late in the third.
Last Meeting... In the closing game of the first ever series between the Fighting Irish and Pioneers, Notre Dame used a four goal second period, earning the eventual 7-0 win at the Joyce Center. Ryan Thang recorded two goals for Notre Dame while Erik Condra added a goal & two assists. Dave Grisom & Eric Giosa led the Pioneers with four & three shots respectively.
All-Time Series... This is the second series ever between Sacred Heart and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish swept the first two meetings nine years ago. The Pioneers are searching for their first goal against Notre Dame after falling 3-0 & 7-0 back in 2008.
Scouting The Fighting Irish... The Fighting Irish, coming off a Frozen Four appearance a season ago enter the weekend 2-1-1 ranked No. 5/6 in the country. Notre Dame enters the weekend with the countries best power play at 38.5%. Senior forward Jake Evans leads the team with eight points on three goals and five assists. Andrew Olgevie is tied with Evans with three goals on the year. Rookie Dylan St. Cyr boasts a .96 goals against average and .976 save percentage.
Magnus Named Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week.... Junior goaltender Brett Magnus was named Travel Team USA Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the week after making 44 saves in the Pioneers 3-1 win over UConn. It is the second career AHA goalie of the week honor for Magnus & his third career win over the Huskies. Also it was the second-highest save total in his career next to his program single-game record 64 saves against Penn State on Nov. 14, 2015.
Rookies Shine In Home Opener Again... For the second straight season SHU's rookie class led the way in the home opener. A season ago, four rookies (Vito Bavaro, Austin McIlmurray, Zach Tsekos & Ruslan Rakhmatov) combined for five points in the 4-4 overtime tie vs. Union. This year four rookies yet again combined for four of the Pioneers nine points. Matt Tugnutt and Alex Bates registered their first career goals. While Marcus Joseph and Josh Allan recorded their first career assists.
