(Buffalo, NY) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team fought hard to take a 3-1 lead into the third period, but the Canisius Golden Griffins scored three unanswered third-period goals to defeat the Pioneers 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
Doug Beck scored 2:26 into the second to break a scoreless tie, with Duncan McKellar and Ryan Bohrer assisting. Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) scored for SHU to tie late in the period, scoring from Drew George (Regina, SK) and Bryan Felice (Middletown, NJ) to tie going into the second intermission.
The Pioneers took a the lead right off the faceoff in the third, going up on a power play goal by George set up by Mitchell Stretch (Saskatoon, SK) and Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) 22 seconds into the period. For Gingera, it was the 91st point of the senior winger's career. Tommy Castonguay (Rimouski, QC) made it a two-goal lead for SHU on the man advantage at 9:55, with Sheehan and Kyle Verbeek (Birmingham, MI) picking up the assists.
However, the Golden Griffins responded with three unanswered goals for the victory. Taylor Law scored twice in 1:46, cutting the deficit to one it at 13:30 on goal set up Kyle Gibbons and Doug Jessey and then tying it at 14:46 on a goal set up by the same two linemates.
Patrick Sullivan followed with the game winner with 3:38 remaining, assisted by McKellar and Scott Moser.
SHU outshot Canisius 32-28 for the game. The Pioneers return to the ice next Friday, January 28 at AIC at 7:05 pm.
