FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Sacred Heart University men's golf freshman Saptak Talwar and senior Matt Shubley earned Northeast Conference honors for the 2017-18 season. Talwar was named the 2017-18 NEC Men's Golf Rookie of the Year while also garnering All-NEC First Team honors with Shubley.
Talwar led the Pioneers with 75.5 scoring average in an opening campaign that saw four top-10 finishes including two in the top-five. He is the fourth golfer in school history to earn NEC Rookie of the Year honors. The rookie had a stellar first appearance at the Northeast Conference Championship last weekend, including a five-under 67 in the final round to set up an eventual playoff. Talwar sunk the par putt on the first playoff hole to become the fourth individual champion in school history.
Shubley claimed his second All-NEC honors after being named to the Second Team a season ago. The senior led the Pioneers with seven top-10 finishes including four in the top-five while posting a 76.5 scoring average. He recorded an event win at the Towson Spring Invitational after carding a three-over 147 in the two-round event.
As the individual conference champion, Talwar will compete at the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Regional down in Kissimmee, Florida at the Reunion Resort on May 14-16.
