Men's Golf Picked Fifth In NEC Coaches Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart men's golf team was selected fifth in the Northeast Conference preseason coaches poll announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

The Pioneers ended the fall with a back-to-back season-low round of 292 to take second place at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate. Last season SHU finished tied for seventh at the NEC Championships at LPGA International. 

Second Team All-NEC selection Matt Shubley leads the Pioneers scoring group after he led the team with a top-20 finish a season ago. Senior Tom D'Andrea and junior Hector Gutierrez also return to the SHU lineup after posting a scoring average of 74.4 and 77.9 respectively.  Junior Alex Manner and rookie Saptak Talwar ended the fall with great showings at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate for SHU.

Defending conference champions Bryant, earned the top spot with five first-place votes. Central Connecticut was picked second with three first-place votes followed by Fairleigh Dickinson with one first-place vote in third. Robert Morris was picked ahead of the Pioneers in fourth.  

Rounding out the poll is Saint Francis U in sixth, Wagner in seventh and LIU Brooklyn and St. Francis Brooklyn in eighth and ninth.

The Pioneers tee off the 2018 slate on Thursday, March 1 at the Gary Freeman BCU Men's Spring Invitational from LPGA International.
