Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at BCU Gary Freeman Invitational


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The Sacred Heart men's golf team opened up its 2017 spring season at the BCU Gary Freeman Spring Invitational at LPGA International. The Pioneers finished the two-day event in eighth place.

Junior Matt Shubley led the Pioneers, as he finished the three-round event tied for 11th place with a score of 11 over par. Shubley best round of the tournament came in round two, finishing one under par. Sophomore Hector Gutierrez placed tied for 32nd at +25 and junior Tom D'Andrea finished tied for 36th, two strokes behind Gutierrez at +27. Both of them shot their best round in the opening round of the tournament with a 78. Rounding out the scoring group for SHU was freshman Clifford Lindholm at +31, finishing tied for 46th.

As a team, Sacred Heart had its best round of the tournament on Thursday. The Pioneers had a team score of 313 in round two, 25 strokes over par. SHU finished the tournament at +94, 18 strokes back of Towson for seventh place. Lynn University won the tournament at +10.  

The Pioneers will return to LPGA International on Monday, March 6 for the first day of the Lonnie Barton Invitational.
