  • Football Hosts Lehigh for Senior Day on Saturday in the Final Home Game of 2019

    Owners of three straight wins, the Sacred Heart football team heads into their final home game of the 2019 season looking to make one final impression on the home fans as the Pioneers host Lehigh on Saturday at 12:00 PM. SHU will honor its 20-member Class of 2020 seniors prior to the start of play. This non-conference meeting with the Mountain Hawks is the Pioneers’ final non-conference game of the season as well as the first all-time meeting against Lehigh.

    Making his first career start on Saturday, Sacred Heart redshirt freshman QB Marquez McCray helped lead the Pioneers to a convincing 41-7 home win over Wagner and for his efforts, McCray picked up Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

    Sacred Heart sophomore RB Julius Chestnut has been named NEC Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, as announced on Sunday morning. Chestnut’s efforts on the ground helped lead the Pioneers to a 41-7 win over Wagner on Saturday afternoon in which SHU scored 41 unanswered points in the second half of play.

A third straight league win pushes SHU to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in Northeast Conference play while the Seahawks fall back to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

    Back-to-back NEC road wins has the Sacred Heart football team flying high with a return to Campus Field set for this week against the Wagner Seahawks. The Pioneers toppled both Saint Francis U (36-33 in overtime) and Bryant (24-17) in consecutive conference games away from home and make a return trip to Fairfield looking to stymie a two-game NEC home losing streak. SHU defeated the Seahawks 41-14 in a dominating performance in Staten Island last season but face a stiff challenge against a Wagner squad with high-end talent on both sides of the ball.

    A career-high 203 rushing yards on Saturday earned Sacred Heart football RB Juilus Chestnut the Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Chestnut picks up his second NEC Offensive Player of the Week honor of the 2019 campaign as he joins CCSU QB Aaron Winchester as the lone players in the conference who’ve earned the award multiple times this season.
  • Football Earns Second Straight NEC Road Win, Defeating Bryant, 24-17

    Taking control of the ball leading by seven at their own 4-yard line, the Sacred Heart football team steamrolled their way up the field behind RB Julius Chestnut as the Pioneers salted away a 24-17 road Northeast Conference victory over Bryant at Beirne Stadium on Saturday afternoon. A second straight win over the Bulldogs in the annual series moves SHU back over .500 in both the overall (5-4) and NEC record (3-2) while Bryant drops to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the league.

    Trailing by 10 midway through the third quarter, the Sacred Heart football team didn’t go away as the Pioneers tied the score late in the fourth and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to topple Saint Francis U, 36-33, on Saturday afternoon from DeGol Field. The much-needed victory snaps a three-game losing streak for SHU as the Pioneers improve to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NEC.

The Pioneers’ third straight loss drops SHU to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Dukes improve to 4-2 overall and remain unbeaten at 2-0 in the league.

    With tons on the line for both teams, the Sacred Heart football team has a huge NEC game ahead this weekend as the defending NEC Co-Champion Duquesne comes to town for a Noon start on Saturday in a game that can be seen live on ESPN3. Both sides went 5-1 in league play last season but a 28-24 triumph for the Dukes in Pittsburg proved the difference as Duquesne advanced to the FCS Playoffs by-way of their win over the Pioneers. Now the top two teams in the preseason NEC poll meet with plenty of postseason implications at-stake as both look to elevate their chances of another league title.

    Following a disappointing outing on Homecoming against CCSU, the Sacred Heart football team heads back on the road for non-conference play with a trip to Philly to take on Penn on Saturday at 1 PM. This serves as the Pioneers’ final non-conference road game of 2019 and also just the second all-time meeting against the Quakers as SHU is looking to avenge a 31-27 loss at home last season to their Ivy League foe. Saturday’s game can be seen on ESPN+.
  • Football Falls to CCSU, 28-3, on Homecoming

    The Sacred Heart football team struggled coming out of the bye week, dropping a 28-3 decision to in-state NEC rival Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon from Campus Field on Homecoming weekend. The Blue Devils (4-1, 1-0 NEC) racked up 464 total yards of offense and forced four turnovers while the Pioneers (3-2, 1-1 NEC) managed just 238 total yards. The Pioneers played in front of a record crowd of 5,402, the most in school history for a Homecoming game.

    After nearly a month without a home game, the Sacred Heart football team makes a triumphant return to Campus Field on Saturday afternoon with a 2 PM kickoff against their in-state NEC rival CCSU. The game will be part of Homecoming weekend on campus at Sacred Heart and will also serve as the team’s cancer awareness game. Both the Pioneers and Blue Devils enter Saturday’s contest with NEC-leading 3-1 overall records in 2019. The NEC’s ‘Game of the Week’ can be seen nationally on ESPN3.

The victory in the NEC opener ups the Pioneers’ (3-1, 1-0 NEC) win streak to three while the Sharks fall to 0-2 (0-1 NEC) on the season.

    Riding an impressive two-game win streak in which the offense has put up a combined 86 points, the Sacred Heart football team heads into their Northeast Conference opener on Saturday with a meeting at the newest league member LIU. Formerly LIU Post, the institution’s athletic programs underwent an integration with LIU Brooklyn to form the LIU Sharks and enter the NCAA Div. I ranks for the first time. Kickoff from Bethpage Stadium is set for 1:00 PM.

These all come on the heels of the Pioneers’ 56-40 road win at Lafayette in which SHU scored its sixth-most points in a game in program history while also recording their fifth straight victory over the Leopards.

Marchi tied a school record with six passing touchdowns and helped engineer a 35-point second half for SHU as the Pioneers overcome a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Lafayette 56-40 on Saturday.

A second consecutive win and first away from home in 2019 moves SHU to 2-1 on the season and 5-1 all-time against the Leopards, who drop to 0-3 on the year in defeat.

SHU owns an impressive 4-1 all-time mark and come in riding a four-game win streak against the Leopards having scored 73 points combined in the last two meetings.
