Men's Fencing Earns Win Over Vassar At Traditions Tournament

The Sacred Heart University men's fencing team went 1-4 at the 2018 Traditions Tournament, hosted at the Pitt Center on Sunday.

The Pioneers were led by their Epee squad, who earned weapon wins versus Princeton, Vassar and Harvard. The group was 25-20 over its five matches.

The Pioneers travel to Penn on January 19, 2019 for its next competition.

Princeton Bout

Vassar Bout

  • SHU captured foil, 7-2, and epee, 8-1, to rally from a 9-0 deficit in sabre
  • Frank Riccio and Julian Mallet both were a perfect 3-0 in foil
  • Centeno (3-0), Cohen (3-0) and Kapitzke (2-0) were perfect in earning eight points in epee

Harvard Bout

  • The Epee squad earned a 6-3 weapon victory
  • Centeno was a perfect 3-0 for a second consecutive bout
  • Kapitzke earned two wins against the Crimson 

NYU Bout

  • SHU earned three points in Epee and a point in Foil
  • Riccio won his final bout of the match for the Foil point
  • Each Pioneer won a point in Epee (Kapitzke, Cohen, Centeno)

Penn State Bout

  • Mallet earned SHU its first point with a win in Foil
  • The trio of Centeno, Cohen and Kapitzke all earned a point in Epee

Individual Numbers

  • Cohen and Centeno both posted 9-6 marks on the day; tops on the team
  • Kapitzke finished the day, 7-7, in Epee
  • Riccio led the Foil unit with four wins
