FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior Lucious Jordan (Albany, NY) poured in a game-high 30 points, while sophomore Jon Iati added 18 to lead the University at Albany over host Sacred Heart University 85-67 in the men's basketball opener for both schools.
Albany, which led wire-to-wire, jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three-pointer and layup by junior Levi Levine (New York, NY). By the midway point of the first half the Great Danes had extended the lead to 26-15.
A 7-0 run by the Pioneers got them back within four at 26-22 with 6:47 left in the half, thanks to a three-pointer by freshman Drew Shubik and four free throws by junior center Kibwe Trim. Albany quelled the uprising with a couple of quick baskets, but freshman Luke Granato (Rocky Hill, CT) again cut the Albany lead to four at 33-29 with 4:05 left.
Albany used a 12-3 run, with 11 of those points coming off the hand of Jordan, over the remainder of the half to lead 45-32 at the intermission.
The Great Danes put the game away early in the second half, outscoring the Pioneers 10-3 in the first five minutes of the period to open a 55-35 lead. Sacred Heart never got closer than 18 the remainder of the game.
Trim led the Pioneers with 17 points, while the backcourt tandem of Shubik and Granato had 12 each.
