Last Time Out... The Pioneers shot 62.1% in the second half to rally from a 39-35 halftime deficit to win at UMass Lowell 87-80 Wednesday night. Joseph Lopez led SHU with 20 points and 13 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. Sean Hoehn added 18 points, a career-high seven steals, and four assists. Mario Matasovic had 18 points as well.
80-Plus... For the second time in three games, SHU scored over 80 points Wednesday night in its 87-80 win at UMass Lowell. The Pioneers shot a season-high 56.1% against the River Hawks, shooting over 50% in each half. The trio of Joseph Lopez, Mario Matasovic, and Sean Hoehn was a combined 23-for-37 from the field (62.2%).
Matasovic Making Shots... Redshirt-Senior forward Mario Matasovic leads the NEC in field goal percentage, shooting 65% from the field through seven games. Matasovic was 7-for-9 from the field Wednesday night for 18 points, adding five rebounds. He has scored in double figures in all seven games this season, averaging 13.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Matasovic is 26th in the nation in field goal percentage.
Radz Rad Off The Bench... Sophomore guard Zach Radz scored a career-high 11 points in SHU's win at UMass Lowell Wednesday night. Radz made six straight free throws in the final 0:45 of the game to ensure the Pioneers' victory, finishing the game 8-for-9 at the foul line. In his last four games, Radz is averaging 9.3 points per game and shooting 84.6% at the free throw line.
All-Time Vs. St. John's... The Red Storm have won both meeting with the Pioneers.
Last Meeting... St. John's defeated the Pioneers 76-49 at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 20, 2007. Eugene Lawrence led the Red Storm with 17 points and eight assists, as Justin Burrell had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Brice Brooks led SHU with eight points. Drew Shubik added seven points and six rebounds. The Pioneers shot under 30% in the first half as it fell behind 48-21.
Scouting St. John's... Picked to finish sixth in the Big East in the preseason, the Red Storm enters Saturday's game 6-1 after defeating UCF 46-43 in the third place game at the AdvoCare Invitational on Nov. 26. Marcus LoVett led St. John's with 12 points in the win over the Golden Knights. Marvin Clark II added 11 points and seven rebounds. Shamorie Ponds, St. John's' leading scorer at 18.9 points per game, had six points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Red Storm is averaging 73.9 points per game, while allowing just 60.7 points per game while having a +7.4 turnover margin.
