Setting the Scene... Riding a two-game winning streak, SHU takes on Northwestern Friday night in its final game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
Last Time Out.. SHU scored a season-high 84 points in an 84-60 win over Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers held the Mariners to 26.7% shooting from the field in the second half to run away with the 24-point victory. Mario Matasovic tied a career-high with 19 points and had 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Pioneer. E.J. Anosike also had his first career double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
All-Time Vs. Northwestern... The Wildcats are 1-0 all-time against the Pioneers.
Last Meeting... In the first meeting between the two schools, Northwestern defeated Sacred Heart 103-67 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Dec. 21, 2015. Cane Broome led all players with 26 points, going 5-for-11 from the three-point line. Alex Olah led five Wildcats in double-figures with 21. Northwestern shot 61% from the field.
80-Plus... SHU scored over 80 points for the seventh time in the past year Wednesday. The Pioneers put up a season-high 84 points in a 24-point win over Mitchell. SHU had five players score in double-figures for the first time since Jan. 14 at Bryant, led by Mario Matasovic's 19 points that tied a career-high.
On The Glass... The Pioneers lead the NEC in rebound margin, outrebounding its opponents by 13 rebounds per game. SHU had its second-best rebound margin this season Wednesday against Mitchell of +16 (49-33). The Pioneers have three of the top-10 rebounders in the NEC - E.J. Anosike (1st-9.8/game), Joseph Lopez (3rd-9.0/game), and Mario Matasovic (8th-7.0/game).
Mario Powers Up... Redshirt-Senior forward Mario Matasovic has scored in double figures in all five games so far this season. Matasovic tied a career-high with 19 points Wednesday against Mitchell, and had a career-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He is currently third in the NEC in field goal percentage at .636.
Anosike Tops NEC In Boards... Freshman forward E.J. Anosike currently leads the NEC in rebounding, averaging 9.8 per game. In the last two games alone, Anosike has 33 rebounds with 14 of them coming on the offensive glass. Anosike had his first career double-double Wednesday with a career-high 14 points to go with 16 rebounds.
Cha Cha Dimes… Senior point guard Charles Tucker Jr. had a season-high eight assists with no turnovers Wednesday against Mitchell. He was fourth in the NEC in assists last season, averaging 4.06 per game. Tucker had at least five assists in a game 12 times in 2016-17.
Scouting Northwestern... The Wildcats enter Friday's game at 3-2 after an 85-49 loss to Texas Tech at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday. Northwestern shot just 26.7% from the field against the Red Raiders. Preseason All-Big Ten selection Scottie Lindsey led the Wildcats with 20 points. Lindsey leads Northwestern in scoring at 17.6 points per game. Bryant McIntosh, a unanimous preseason All-Big Ten pick, is second on the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game and averages just under six assists per game. Northwestern has averaged 74.6 points per game so far this season.
