Last Time Out... Sacred Heart shot 50.8% from the field Thursday night as the Pioneers took down St. Francis Brooklyn 80-65 for Pack The Pitt Night. The Pioneers made 10-of-17 three-pointers in the victory. Quincy McKnight led the Pioneers with 25 points and added six rebounds. Mario Matasovic set new season-highs of 19 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
All-Time vs. Central Connecticut... The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 37-22. Sacred Heart has won four of the last five meetings in the rivalry, including each of the last three.
Last Meeting... Two Quincy McKnight free throws with 0:34 left were the difference as Sacred Heart defeated Central Connecticut 64-62 at Detrick Gymnasium on Jan. 5. It was the Pioneers' first conference win of the season. McKnight was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line and led SHU with 23 points. Joseph Lopez had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mustapha Jones led CCSU with 23 points and eight rebounds.
And Down The Stretch They Come... Sacred Heart has hit its stride in February over the last two seasons. The Pioneers have proven that to be true so far in 2017, going 3-0 after Thursday night's win over St. Francis Brooklyn. SHU has won its three games in February by an average of 7.3 points per game while outrebounding opponents by almost 10 per game. In 2014-15, the Pioneers went 5-2 in February to finish tied for fifth in the NEC. Last season, SHU was 6-2 in February to tie for second place in the NEC.
McKnight's Making Shots... Sophomore guard Quincy McKnight had his eighth game of at least 25 points Thursday night in SHU's win over St. Francis Brooklyn. McKnight was a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point line in scoring a team-high 25 points against the Terriers. He had 26 points in the first meeting against St. Francis Brooklyn. McKnight is second in the NEC in scoring at 19.4 points per game, and is among the top-10 in steals (7th - 1.5/game) and assists (9th - 3.15/game).
Another Super Game From Mario... Sacred Heart has gotten a lift from forward Mario Matasovic over the last five games. Matasovic has averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game during that stretch, shooting 52.9% from the field and 81.3% at the free throw line. He posted season-highs of 19 points, eight rebounds, and three steals in Thursday night's win over St. Francis Brooklyn. Matasovic has scored in double figures three times in the last five games.
Sharing The Ball... Sacred Heart leads the NEC in assists, averaging 14.50 per game. SHU had 17 assists Thursday night on 27 made field goals and only committed 13 turnovers. The Pioneers have three players among the top 10 in the conference in assists. Charles Tucker Jr. is fourth at 3.85 assists per game, with Sean Hoehn eighth at 3.27 and Quincy McKnight ninth at 3.15.
Scouting the Blue Devils... Central Connecticut enters Saturday's game 3-10 in the NEC after a 79-62 loss at Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday night. The Blue Devils are two games back of seventh-place Robert Morris and Bryant. Mustapha Jones led CCSU with 15 points and seven rebounds at FDU Thursday night. Tidell Pierre added 11 points and seven boards. CCSU 3-3 in its last six games with wins over LIU Brooklyn and Mount St. Mary's. Austin Nehls leads the Blue Devils in scoring at 13.7 points per game, shooting 37.4% at the three point line. Khalen Cumberlander is second with 12.7 points per game.
