Setting the Scene... The Pioneers travel to Boston to take on the Boston College Eagles for a Sunday matinee.
Last Time Out... Six Pioneers scored in double-figures as SHU won at Lafayette 85-61 on Dec. 11. Joseph Lopez led the Pioneers with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sean Hoehn and Matej Buovac both had 13 points as Charles Tucker, Quincy McKnight, and Chris Robinson each had 12 points. SHU outrebounded the Leopards 48-33 and outscored Lafayette 40-16 in the paint.
All-Time vs. Boston College... The Eagles have won all seven meetings against Sacred Heart dating back to 2003. Four of the games have been decided by 10 points or less.
Lopez Scores And Boards... Joseph Lopez had his second double-double of the season last Sunday with a game-high 14 points and 14 rebounds. He tied his season-high for boards set in the season opener at Fairfield on Nov. 11. In the last five games, Lopez has made 28 of 37 shots from the field for 75.7%. He has averaged 13.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per gameduring this current stretch. Lopez earned two weekly honors the week of Dec. 5. He was named the NEC Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 5 and the Co-D-I Men's Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association on Dec. 6. Lopez shot 93.8% from the field last week in games against Fordham and Hartford, making 15 of 16 shots from the floor.
Take Them And Make Them... SHU leads the NEC in free throw percentage at 72.5%. The Pioneers have shot over 80% at the line three times this season, including an 89.5% (17-19) mark in the win over Hofstra on Nov. 15 in the home opener. Sacred Heart has been to the foul line at least 20 times in five of the last eight games.
Sharing the Basketball... SHU has had double-digit assists in each of the last 10 games. The Pioneers had 15 assists on 29 baskets last Sunday at Lafayette. Over the last five games, Sacred Heart has averaged 15 assists per game and assisted on 57.7% of its made field goals. The Pioneers are fourth in the NEC in assists with 13.91 per game.
Cha-Cha Dimes... Junior guard Charles Tucker Jr. has averaged 4.6 assists per game with a 1.6 assist to turnover ratio over the last five games. Last Sunday, Tucker had 12 points and seven assists in SHU's 85-61 win at Lafayette. On Dec. 6 Tucker had 13 points and five assists in the win over UMass Lowell. He had a season-high eight assists at Fordham on Nov. 30. Tucker leads the NEC in free throw percentage at 90.3% and is seventh in assists at 3.55 per game.
Last Meeting... The Pioneers shot 52.2% from the field in the first half en route to a 34-27 lead at halftime at Boston College on Nov. 26, 2013, but the Eagles rallied to force overtime. In the extra period, SHU made just one of six field goals as the Eagles were 9-of-10 at the foul line on its way to a 75-67 win. Ryan Anderson led Boston College with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Evans led the Pioneers with 18 points as Phil Gaetano had four three-pointers and 16 points. Steve Glowiak added 15 points off the bench.
Scouting the Eagles... Picked 15th in the ACC preseason poll, Boston College enters Sunday's game at 5-5 after a 72-71 win over Auburn at Madison Square Garden last Monday. The Eagles outrebounded the Tigers 35-25 but committed 22 turnovers. Jerome Robinson led Boston College with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Ky Bowman added 15 points with A.J. Turner putting up 13 points. Robinson leads the Eagles with 19.3 points, adding 5.5 rebounds per game.
