Setting the Scene... The Pioneers hit the road before finals with a Sunday matchup at Lafayette.
Last Time Out... SHU shot 31.7% from the field Thursday night in a 66-52 loss to Yale at the Pitt Center. Yale broke a 26-26 tie with a 14-2 run early in the second half. De'von Barnett led SHU with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double in three games. Quincy McKnight added 12 points and a game-high three steals.
All-Time vs. Lafayette... The Leopards lead the series against Sacred Heart 5-2. Sacred Heart won two of the first three meetings, including the initial one on Nov. 15, 2009 81-70. Lafayette has won the last four meetings, including last season's 90-86 win at the Pitt Center.
Last Meeting... The Pioneers dropped their home opener to Lafayette 90-86 on Dec. 12, 2015. The Leopards shot 60% from the field, led by 28 points and eight three-pointers from Bryce Scott. SHU had five players score in double-figures, led by Cane Broome's 20 points. Matej Buovac added 18 points and five rebounds. Chris Robinson had 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
De'von Double-Doubles Up... Forward De'von Barnett had his second double-double in three games Thursday night. Barnett had 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in each of the last four games. He had 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in Tuesday night's win over UMass Lowell. Last Saturday, Barnett had his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In the last four games, Barnett is averaging 11.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.9% from the field.
McKnight Keeps Scoring... Since scoring just two points at Fordham on Nov. 30, Quincy McKnight has averaged 22 points per game over the last three. He scored over 30 points for the first time in his career Tuesday night, putting up 34 in SHU's win over UMass Lowell. McKnight was 11-for-21 from the field and 11-for-13 at the free throw line. He also had a team-high nine rebounds and five assists. After starting the game 4-for-11 from the field, McKnight was 7-for-10 from the field in the second half and scored 21 points. On Thursday, McKnight had 12 points against Yale. He is second in the NEC in scoring at 19.2 points per game.
Sweet Charity... SHU has shot over 80% from the charity stripe in three of its four wins this season. The Pioneers lead the NEC in free throw percentage at 72.9%. Junior guard Charles Tucker Jr. is second in the NEC individually at 88.9%. Quincy McKnight is tied for ninth at 75%.
Scouting the Leopards... Picked ninth in the Patriot League Preseason Coaches Poll, Lafayette enters Sunday's game with a 3-5 record after an 81-52 loss to Penn on Wednesday night. Matt Klinewski leads Lafayette with 17.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, shooting 54.1% from the field. Nick Lindner adds 13.8 points and 5.4 assists per game. Lafayette is averaging 64.9 points per game and allows 76 points per game. The Leopards are 1-0 against the NEC so far this season, winning at St. Francis Brooklyn 74-72 on Dec. 5.
