BRONX, N.Y. – Trailing by 11 with 6:14 to play Wednesday night, the Sacred Heart men's basketball team went on a 16-4 run to rally for a 71-70 win over the Fordham Rams at Rose Hill Gym. De'von Barnett scored the game-winning basket with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Barnett finished the game with 11 points and four assists. Joseph Lopez led SHU with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Pioneer, going 7-for-7 from the field. He scored 17 points in the second half alone. Sean Hoehn had a season-high 17 points and six rebounds, playing 37 minutes without a turnover.
Sacred Heart (3-4) got off to a slow start as Fordham jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. A De'von Barnett layup at the 18:42 mark sparked a 12-2 run for the Pioneers that gave SHU a 14-7 lead with 14:56 to play in the first. The Pioneers led by as much as six in the first half, as four straight foul shots from Charles Tucker Jr. and Hoehn put SHU up 25-19 with 9:01 remaining in the half.
Fordham (5-3) then went on a big run. The Rams outscored SHU 15-2 over the next 3:26 to take a 34-27 lead on a David Pekarek layup with 3:59 to go. Javontae Hawkins had nine points for the Rams during that spurt. The Pioneers got back in the game with a quick 7-2 run, as Robinson and Hoehn scored six straight to make the score 36-34 with 1:26 left in the half. The Rams ended the half scoring the last seven points to take a 43-34 lead at the break.
SHU cut into Fordham's lead with a 13-4 run in the second half, with seven Lopez points making the score 49-47 with 13:17 to play. The Pioneers were within five when six straight Hawkins points put the Rams ahead by 11, 66-55, with 6:14 to play. SHU then made their charge back in the game.
It started with an 11-0 run, capped off by five straight points from Hoehn and a Barnett jumper to tie the game 66-66 with 2:31 to play. After Fordham made 4-out-of-5 free throws to take a 70-66 lead with 2:01 to go, Barnett converted a three-point play with 0:43 left to get SHU within one 70-69. The Pioneers forced a Fordham turnover on the next possession, giving them 0:17 to take the lead. Fifteen seconds later, Charles Tucker Jr. set up Barnett for the eventual game-winning layup. SHU forced one more turnover to lock up the 71-70 win.
The Pioneers shot 61.1% from the field and 82.1% from the free throw line. SHU also dominated the glass 32-14, holding Fordham without a field goal for the final 6:52. Hawkins led all scorers with 23 points.
SHU returns to Coach Bike Court at the William H. Pitt Center on Saturday, Dec. 3 for a 1 p.m. matchup against Hartford.
