Men's Basketball Hangs On For Win Over Norfolk State

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team hung on Friday for a 61-59 win over the Norfolk State Spartans in the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena.

Quincy McKnight led the Pioneers with 18 points and added five rebounds. Chris Robinson made four three-pointers for a season-high 12 points. Charles Tucker Jr. had 10 points. De'von Barnett led all players with 10 rebounds.

Norfolk State (2-5) jumped out to a fast 10-0 lead, getting eight straight points from Kyle Williams to open the game. SHU cut the deficit in half, 16-11, on a Chris Robinson three and back-to-back layups by McKnight at the 12:07 mark. The Pioneers closed to three, 20-17, at the 7:00 mark, before a pair of Zaynah Robinson three-pointers put Norfolk State up 23-17. Trailing 28-21, SHU went on a 9-2 run capped off by five straight points from Barnett and Chris Robinson to tie the game 30-30 with 0:31 left in the half. The Spartans took a 33-30 lead into halftime on a three by Jonathan Wade with 0:06 remaining.

After getting behind by six points early in the second half, Sacred Heart (2-4) used a 10-3 run over 1:55 to take a 43-42 lead with 14:29 to play. Matasovic scored the last four points of the run to put the Pioneers in front. Sean Hoehn's three-pointer at the 12:46 mark capped a stretch of six straight made baskets by SHU, giving the Pioneers a 49-47 lead.

The Pioneers held Norfolk State without a field goal for a span of 5:11 in the second half, but a quick 7-0 run for the Spartans put them back ahead 54-51 with 5:19 to go. Norfolk State led 56-55 when Robinson gave SHU the lead for good with his fourth three of the game, making the score 58-56 with 3:08 to go.  The Pioneers then made three free throws to extend the lead to 61-56 with 1:18 to go. Norfolk State made one last run at the win, getting a three from Jonathan Wade with 0:47 left to make the score 61-59. After a SHU turnover, the Spartans had one last chance to, at least, force overtime. However, Sean Hoehn stole the ball from Alex Long to preserve the SHU win.

SHU shot 46.8% from the field Friday, holding Norfolk State to 39.6%. The Pioneers also held a 33-30 advantage on the glass. Wade led all scorers with 28 points. Williams added 14 points.

The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 with a 7 p.m. game at Fordham.


First Half

- Norfolk State opened half on 10-0 run, with Williams scoring the first eight.
- Hoehn scored SHU's first basket at the 16:44 mark.

- SHU held the Spartans to just two field goals over the last 5:45 of the half.

- The Pioneers went on an 11-4 run over 4:49 late in the half to tie the game 30-30 on a Barnett jumper.


Second Half 

- SHU made six straight field goals at one point in the second half.

- The Pioneers also held Norfolk State scoreless for 5:11.
- SHU made 6-of-7 three-pointers in the second half.
