Men's Basketball Selected to Finish 8th in NEC Preseason Coaches Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team was selected to finish 8th in the 2013-14 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll that was announced as part of the NEC Social Media Day Tuesday afternoon at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Head Coach Anthony Latina will begin his first season as the Head Coach of the Pioneers after serving as an assistant coach for the past eight years.

Last season, the Pioneers finished ninth in the NEC with a record of 9-20 and 7-11 in the conference. SHU returns four key contributors from a year ago, including senior Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) who is the Pioneers leading returning scorer (14.4 ppg). Junior point guard Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) also returns for the Pioneers following an impressive sophomore season in which he averaged 7.9 assists per game (2nd in the NEC).  SHU will also return two r-juniors, Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) and Evan Kelley (Norwalk, CT), who both missed all of last season with injuries.

The Pioneers open up the 2013-14 campaign on November 9th against cross-town rival Fairfield as part of the Connecticut 6.
