FAIRFIELD, CT (February 13, 2012) - Sacred Heart's Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT) earned his third Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week award on Monday after leading the Pioneers to a NEC Rivalry Week sweep of Bryant. Gibson is named the co-winner, sharing the award this week with LIU Brooklyn's Jamal Olasewere.
Gibson averaged 32.0 points per game and shot 63.6% from the field as SHU defeated Bryant in both games of the teams' NEC Rivalry Week series and improved to 7-7 in conference play this season. The league's leading scorer in conference play at 25.9 points per game, Gibson opened the week with a 30-point demonstration that saw him hit 10 of his 16 shots from the field, including five from downtown, as the Pioneers squeaked out a 79-77 victory over the Bulldogs at home. Along with breaking the 30-point plateau, he broke the SHU Division I single-season scoring record, surpassing Maurice Bailey's mark of 542 (2003-04) by finishing the night with 564 points. After a short break, Gibson would pick up right where he left off on Saturday, this time supplying the Pioneers with 34 points in an 72-46 win over the Bulldogs. Entering the game seven minutes in, the Killingly, CT, product sparked a 37-9 run with 11 straight points before finishing the first half with 23 and his team up 34-20. For the game, he shot 11-for-17 from the field and 9-for-10 from the line. He also added four assists and three steals. Gibson leads the NEC and ranks fourth nationally in scoring at 22.1 ppg. He has scored 20 or more points in 12-of-14 league games and an NEC-best 18 times overall this season. Gibson also leads the conference with four 30+ point outings.
The Pioneers return to the court this week with a pair of games in Brooklyn. SHU will face league leader LIU Brooklyn on Saturday night and head to St. Francis (NY) on Saturday night for a game being televised live on MSG Network.
