HAMMOND, LA - Senior Jeff Hanson banged out four hits, including a grand slam in the fifth innings, to help the Sacred Heart baseball team to a 13-8 win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon. The win evened the Pioneer record at 1-1 with one game remaining in the three-game series with the Lions.
The Pioneers scored three times with just two hits in the first inning. SHU got a leadoff hit from MJ Schifano and a pair of walks with one out loaded the bases. Jeff Heppner was hit by a pitch to force home Schifano. Paul Schmidt drove home the second with a sacrifice fly and Mike Olszyk plated the third with a single.
Starting pitcher Matt Fitton gave up a run in the second and two in the third, but the Pioneers held on to a 4-3 lead going to the fourth. Hanson drove in two with a double in the top of the fourth and Heppner made it 7-3 with a sacrifice fly to right.
SHU broke it open in the fifth. Rocco Gondek led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Lion error. Hanson gave the Pioneers a 12-3 lead in the frame with his bases-clearing blast to left center.
Fitton pitched the first five innings, allowing the three runs on nine hits. Olszyk came on in the sixth and threw three innings, yielding two hits and two unearned runs.
The Pioneers finished the game with 15 hits, including the four from Hanson and three by senior Tyler Santos.
