FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Equestrian team has concluded its regular season breaking records, setting milestones and making program history.
The Pioneers clinched the Hunt Seat Regional Championship on Sunday, Mar. 3 and advanced the team to the Zone I Championship at Mount Holyoake College on April 6. Over the past eight seasons the Pioneers have won the Region in six out of the eight times. The Pioneers topped the scoreboard with 45 points over UConn's 33. SHU's team score of 45 was just shy of a perfect score of 49. It was also the high score for the season in Zone I Region 5.
On the individual Hunt Seat level the Pioneers have won six out of 10 High Point Rider awards. Senior Cariann Johnson took five of them and junior Gabriella Sorrentino earned the honor one time. Johnson dominated in the Open division this season and has earned the Zone I Region 5 High Point Rider honor. She finished the season 36 points ahead of her closest competitor. She will advance to the Zone Championship in where the top three will advance to the National Championships.
A total of 15 student-athletes qualified as individuals for Regional Championship hosted by Connecticut College on March 30. The equestrian team will return to action as the Western Squad competes at the Western Semi-Finals in Ocala, Florida beginning March 16.
