The NCAA announced their Public Recognition Awards Wednesday with two Sacred Heart athletic programs being recognized for their academic achievements. The men's fencing and women's cross country teams were recognized for scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with respect to their Academic Progress Rate (APR).
The 1,203 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 746 women's teams and 457 men's or mixed squads. The scores required to reside in the top 10 ranged from 984 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 1,090 teams. A total of 290 schools placed at least one team on the top APR list.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
