Two members of the Sacred Heart University Department of Athletics are representing The United States of America at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. The opening ceremonies of the games are this evening and the closing ceremonies are September 18.
SHU alumna Jackie Smith is a member of Team USA's LTAMix4+ in rowing, while head men's volleyball coach Greg Walker is the head coach of Team USA Men's Sitting Volleyball team.
Smith, an assistant coach with the Pioneers crew team, begins her competition on Friday, September 9 with heats. The LTA4Mix+ heats are currently scheduled for 10:30 am and 10:50 a.m. Should Smith and her teammates advance, the medal race takes place on Sunday, September 11 at 10:50 a.m. Repacharge heats will be competed on Saturday morning.
Walker and the sitting volleyball team are in Pool A and begin preliminary matches on Friday, September 9, taking on the host nation, Brazil at 10:00 a.m. Pool play continues on September 11 at 6:30 p.m. versus Germany and concludes two days later at 2:00 p.m. versus Egypt. The men's sitting medal rounds, taking the top two teams from each pool, will be played the evening of September 16, with the medal matches being played on the September 18.
