Junior Sarah Tencza (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) led the way again finishing third as the SHU women's cross country team won the 32nd Annual Fairfield University Victor F. Leeber Invitational. Senior John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) won the men's race and set a Sacred Heart record with a time of 25:19, the men's team took third overall.

The women dominated the 11 team field in the 5k race winning the Fairfield Invitational for the fifth consecutive year and 10 of the last 12 years. Tencza's third place time of 19:18.80 was ten seconds in front of freshman teammate Mekenzie Krause (Bennington,VT/Mt. Anthony Union), who has become the number two runner for the Pioneers.

Sara Pollock (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown), who finished seventh, and Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) both ran personal bests with times of 19:35.51 and 20:19.20, respectively. Kathleen Henry (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) crossed the line in 12th in 20:02.04. Samantha and Dana Troy (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial) rounded out the Pioneers very strong overall performance with finishes of 8th and 13th place.

Kenworthy was not the only Pioneer to put his name in the record books this weekend. Sophomore Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted the fourth fastest time in SHU history at 26:08 and finished 10th. Brendan Rickert (Danbury, CT/Danbury) placed 13th for the Pioneers crossing the tape in 26:17.


 

 

Richard Marcello (Foster, RI/Scituate) ran the third fastest time ever for a Sacred Heart freshman as he finished in 26:56. Luis German (Southampton, NY/Southampton), Ryan Murdoch (Salem, CT/East Lyme), and Jeffrey Lusignan (East Montpelier, VT/U-32 HS) rounded out the Pioneer top seven finishing in 19th, 30th, and 36th. SHU used these strong performances to finish in 3rd in the 11 team field.

The Sacred Heart Cross Country teams are back in action October 11 at the New England Championship to be held at Franklin Park in Boston, MA.
